So, there’s a specific rule at my house. Always have something sweet (but healthy) stored in the fridge, because you never know when the sweet tooth kicks in. Right!?

I really like to experiment with new ingredients and recipes. But sometimes you just have to work with what you have at home. So this time I used ingredients, that are pretty much always in my kitchen. Oats, dates, cacao powder and walnuts. Nothing fancy, really. But the outcome is so yummy! Not to sweet, but just sweet enough to make me happy :).

You can totally add extra sweetens to the recipe, but I didn’t feel the need to. I kept it simple and natural. I prefer it that way.

Oats

A cup of oats a day, keeps the doctor away!

Oats are perfect breakfast or snack food. They are very high in fiber – they contain a specific type of fiber named beta-glucan. It has been proven that beta-glucan has beneficial impact on cholesterol levels. Oats are also rich in antioxidants. That’s why eating oats regularly prevents or at least lower the chance of cardiovascular diseases. They also lower the risk of heart diseases and diabetes.

Many studies show that oats increase appetite-control hormones. This is the reason oats are recommended food when it comes to weight loss.

Walnuts

Walnuts are mostly known as great plant based source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are great for your heart. It is proven, that people who eat food rich in omega-3 fatty acids on a regular basis, are less likely to have a heart attack.Walnuts also help to prevent cancer, especially prostate and breast cancer.

They are also good source of vitamin E, melatonin and antioxidants. The majority of antioxidants in walnuts are found in their skin, so don’t peel them if there is no need to.

Walnuts are also full of healthy fats, that help you feel full for longer, so they are great food to eat while weight loss journey.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup oat flour (ground oats)
  • 1 cup dates (soaked and chopped)
  • 1/2 cup walnut flour (ground walnut)
  • 2 tbsp raw cacao powder

Instructions

  1. Finely chop soaked dates. You can help yourself with fork to make a paste.
  2. In a bowl mix chopped dates, cacao powder and walnut flour.
  3. Add oat flour in the mixture- 1/2 of cup at first, mix, then add the rest.
  4. You can add extra sweetener if the mixture is not sweet enough for you (maple syrup, honey, coconut sugar, agave syrup etc.).
  5. Form a small balls with your hands.
  6. Put them in airtight container and let them rest in the refrigerator for a while.
  7. Enjoy.  

Notes

I've soaked dates for a whole day. This way they are really soft and moist, so I didn't need to add extra liquid to the energy bites mixture.
